History

BiCoastal Music began in 1988. While scoring commercials and recording local songwriters from his home studio in Los Angeles, Hal Winer envisioned a studio/production facility that would provide the perfect environment for musical creativity, where musicians could be comfortable to relax, settle in and realize their creative dreams.

His vision began to take form in 1992 when he moved back to New York. Working out of a rental house, he cut vocals in the upstairs closet, drums in the living room, guitars in the downstairs closet and cabling became the decorative floor covering. In 1997, Hal purchased the property and gradually built a more proper facility by taking over a portion of the 2nd floor as studio space.

Early projects included a wide variety of jazz artists and singer-songwriters. Highlights from that period included Adam Rafferty, The Yallopin Hounds, The Gene Segal Trio, The Jerry Mac Band, and Jack Wilkins’ “Reunion” which was nominated for a Grammy in 2001.

In 2003 The Russ Berger Design Group was hired to design a new space. Construction began that summer and the studio was up and running in February of 2004. Since then, BiCoastal has hosted countless projects from many different artists and genres. Musicians from all over the world have come to BiCoastal Music to manifest their musical visions.

In 2005, freelance engineer/producer Daryl Bornstein started to bring his work to BiCoastal. Daryl is an accomplished producer/engineer whose projects have included work with world-renowned members of the NY Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera. Daryl specializes in classical, theatrical, jazz and world music genres, and he’s also an expert at location recording. He has become an integral part of the BiCoastal Music family.

In 2009, legendary keyboardist and music director Clifford Carter joined the BiCoastal team. A seasoned veteran of the industry and a household name in the NY music scene, Clifford has a a seemingly endless resume that reads like a who’s who of the music world. Known for his ability to translate and codify an artist’s vision, his “in the cracks” philosophy brings out the best in every composition. Clifford and Hal have been providing production help for songwriters and bands looking to raise their game. From form to arrangement to band contracting, their unique collaboration has become a defining feature of BiCoastal Music.

In 2010, Kevin Kane came onboard to direct studio business development.   Kevin has extensive experience in business administration, marketing, and development. He is also an accomplished singer-songwriter with a diverse collection of work.  Kevin and Hal are focused on developing BiCoastal Music into a “new world” full-service music company.

With the general collapse of the music industry and the demise of so many studios, BiCoastal is now one of the last world-class studios in the New York region.
